About Our District

About Our District

All staff in the Capistrano Unified School District are committed to the belief that children will learn that children will learn more today than yesterday and that they will learn more tomorrow than today. The district’s commitment to the more than 47,000 students entrusted to its care remains steadfast. Our commitment to instructional excellence drives the mission of our nearly 4,000 employees.

Founded in 1965, Capistrano Unified encompasses 200 square miles in seven cities and a portion of the unincorporated area of Orange County. With 63 campuses, it is the largest employer in south Orange County. The district includes all or part of the cities of San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, Mission Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita, and the communities of Las Flores, Coto de Caza, Dove Canyon, Ladera Ranch, Sendero/Rancho Mission Viejo, and Wagon Wheel.

The district is governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees, which generally meets monthly at the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) Education Center, 33122 Valle Road, San Juan Capistrano. Information about meeting times and agendas is available here.

DWYC’s membership is strong, and we consider one another family! Whether you’re a salty sailor, prize-winning angler, new to the harbor and looking to make friends that “get you,” the Club’s social atmosphere is incomparable to any other.

Those who own a qualifying vessel are welcome to seek membership by emailing the Vice Commodore and completing an application. That is your first step to membership.

Timing for consideration is based on whether you own a boat, as there are lists for both categories at this time. Don’t worry! We’ll keep you informed and get you in as soon as possible!

OUR STORY

In July 1931, eight young men formed what is now the West Coast Yacht Club.  Inasmuch as the charter members were building boats in their backyards, a sawhorse was selected as the keynote of the club burgee.  A combination of the school colors of the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Southern California were chosen for the burgee, resulting in a sky-blue sawhorse superimposed upon a field of cardinal and gold.

Since the inception of the WCYC, its burgee has been flown by members on cruises to many of the romantic ports on the Pacific and The Atlantic Oceans and The Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas, including such places as Alaska, New Zealand and The Panama Canal.

West Coast Yacht Club is a cruising club with cruises and events scheduled throughout the year. Sailing members can enter any Southern California Yachting Association (S.C.Y.A.) race under our burgee. Our members are very active, participating in cruises and various other activities on the water, guaranteeing that you will get more use out of your boat, whether sail or power, by joining WCYC.
