The Laguna Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) is located in a small, historical coastal community in Orange County where tourism is the main industry. The city of Laguna Beach is located 50 miles south of Los Angeles and 80 miles north of San Diego and has approximately 23,000 residents. Laguna Beach is known for its “scenic coves, environmental preservation, and an artist community.” Home to the Pageant of the Masters and the Festival of the Arts. Laguna attracts approximately 3 million visitors annually due to its miles of coastline, a downtown village, and summer art festivals.

Laguna Beach Unified School District is a relatively small school district with less than 400 employees, serving nearly 2800 students in grades transitional kindergarten through 12 by providing comprehensive educational programs through its two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The district also provides a specialized preschool program and an adult education program. LBUSD is widely recognized as an outstanding district throughout Orange County and California. LBUSD has a clear, unwavering focus on student learning within a caring, supportive environment.

Demographically, our student population is approximately 73 percent white, 11 percent Hispanic, 8 percent two or more races, 5 percent Asian, 1 percent African American, and 1 percent Filipino. Student groups demographics include 12 percent socioeconomic disadvantaged, 12 percent students with disabilities, 3 percent English learners, and less than 1 percent homeless and foster youth. Student achievement has increased year after year and our students are among the highest-achieving students in the state. The district strives to ensure all students are well-balanced with social emotional strength and positive self-identity.

LBUSD has two employee associations, Laguna Beach Unified Faculty Association (LaBUFA) for certificated staff and California School Employees Association (CSEA for classified staff, and a group of non-represented, at-will administrators. All employees are well-compensated with average salaries higher than the statewide average. The job benefits minimize employee turnover and create overall staffing consistency. LBUSD is proud of its strong community support and partnerships, including the PTA, SchoolPower Education Foundation, College and Career Advantage, the Early Learning Task Force, Boys and Girls Club of Laguna Beach, and City of Laguna Beach.

The LBUSD Public Communications team has laid a strong foundation from which to drive branding and marketing efforts districtwide. Channels of communication have been established and defined for each audience with content carefully tailored for each stakeholder group.

About Us

MISSION STATEMENT:

Thalia Surf Shop offers unique retro surfboards and hard to find surfing apparel. We curate the alternative for surfers, artists, shapers, and brands because we know the market can be pretty oversaturated. Our goal is to serve well and inspire you with new authentic products every time you visit our shop or thaliasurf.com.

SHOP:

Located on the corner of Laguna’s historic PCH and Thalia Street, we’ve been a staple in the surf community since 2001. Back when logos were big and egos even bigger, Nick Cocores set out to show the other side of surfing – the style, originality and soul of the sport. He partnered with some of the greats before they became who we know today by showcasing their talent through film, graphic design, and art. And before we knew it, we had a strong following on our hands. Now, almost 2 decades later, we’re still slinging more than just tees for our customers who want to support the independent artists today. Shopping with us not only supports just our small business, but multiple as well. From the screen printer, blank manufacturers, and artists whose designs we commission, your business affects and is appreciated by many.

SCREENPRINTING:

When the shop first started, Nick purchased all the Screenprinting equipment and set up shop in the back of his step dad’s fabrication shop in Vista, Ca. He would bring the tees straight up to the shop the following morning – fresh off the press to say the least. But as time went on, and the shop demand grew, he knew he wouldn’t have time to do both. Enter Sean Tully at Forward Screen Printing. Our friendship with Sean precedes those early shop days, and we still rely on him for all of our Screenprinting needs today. He’s been able to print every design we’ve thrown at him over the years – from a one-color Andy Davis design to an eight color Hairy Daily watercolor print that comes out beautiful every time.

SURFBOARDS:

Here at Thalia Surf, we have a surf everything mentality. It’s even on some of our tees. But we also show this by offering a wide range of hand shaped and machined boards from local shapers. Visit the shop and you might see a personal delivery from one of our friends like Alex Knost, Tyler Warren, Campbell Brothers, or Gato Heroi, just to name a few. From a single fin to a 5 fin bonzer – we’ve got you covered.

VANS:

We were approached by the iconic brand towards the end of 2010 to create a partner store to ensure their surf line meets the needs of the local surfer. To this day, we are the only partnership on the west coast, with one other partnership in Chicago. We’re proud to carry a specific selection of Vans gear that is inspired by Laguna’s surf community by offering the full collections with your favorite athletes that you might not find in your average Vans store and exclusive products with artists you can’t find anywhere else.

LESSONS AND RENTALS: 

Our instructors are our friends. They’re people we trust to give you the experience of surfing that we know and love here. They have experience with a wide range of talent – whether you’re just starting out or you’ve never surfed Laguna and want a local to guide you. Give us a call at the shop when you’re ready to schedule your next lesson, and we’ll make sure you leave the water with a grin!

We rent softboards and bodyboards and also wetsuits! The softboards are 8-foot wave storms equipped with plastic fins and a leash for your leg. The bodyboards also come equipped with a leash for your arm. We are stocked with rental wetsuits for Men, Women and kids for those colder beach days. Rental equipment is charged by the day, so to get the most for your money, get in early, and have it back before dark!
