About Us
The Fountain Valley School District, founded in 1876, is comprised of ten schools, seven elementary and three middle, serving more than 6,000 students from the cities of Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach. Fountain Valley School District seeks to promote a foundation for academic excellence, mastery of basic skills, responsible citizenship, and a desire by students to achieve their highest potential through a partnership with home and community.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to promote a foundation for academic excellence, mastery of basic skills, responsible citizenship, and a desire by students to achieve their highest potential through a partnership with home and community.
Welcome to Fountain Valley School District! For years, our District has been known for its tradition of academic success, earning countless local, state, and national awards for our exceptional educational programs. In fact, for the last several years, FVSD has been the highest-performing elementary district in Orange County. We are also part of an extraordinary community that continues to place a high priority on its children.
In FVSD, we desire to be the best at what we do: educate young minds and develop every student’s unique talent. And it is this passion for greatness pushes us to look for additional ways to help students thrive, not only while they are with us, but well into their futures. Over the last several years, we have made significant progress in professional development, California State Standards implementation, collaboration, technology, curriculum development, facilities modernization, visual and performing arts, student connectedness, and fiscal solvency. This work will only continue through our collective commitment to our vision for every student. In addition, our District Priorities continue to be a guiding force to strategically align our programs, practices, and services with the resources needed to accomplish our goals!
As we look to the new school year, we focus on everything that inspires each of us. While the current school year brings unique challenges, we are confident in the resilience and creativity of our team. The FVSD Family comprises highly skilled teachers and classified staff led by dedicated administrators. In addition, our family is fortunate to include outstanding parents and guardians who have stepped up even more these past few months and will continue to ensure our students succeed this year. Lastly, we are grateful to be a part of a wonderful community that supports our students, staff, and schools in every way possible. Together, our FVSD Family continues the FVSD Way, including a commitment to high expectations for all, working collaboratively to improve practices and meet future challenges, dedicating ourselves to professional learning, and working to ensure that ALL students meet or exceed expectations.
And just as in years past, our commitment to excellence will strengthen our implementation of the California State Standards in English Language Arts and math and enhance the collaborative work of our teachers and administrators to explore and apply the Next Generation Science Standards, STEM initiatives, and signature instructional practices. Additionally, we are incredibly pleased to report that eight of our ten schools have been honored with the Gold Ribbon Schools Award, a recognition program from the California Department of Education. Lastly, we have made significant advances in the implementation of educational technology. Every student can access a Chromebook to support learning. Used effectively, we view technology as a game-changer in student learning, as information is readily available to all, providing us with the necessary time to increase opportunities for problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, and innovation.
As we begin the 2023-2024 school year, we are committed to carrying on our tradition of merit. We will continue to prepare today’s youth for tomorrow’s future as we are devoted and dedicated to impacting the lives of ALL children. And, without a doubt, The FVSD Family will continue to provide a caring and nurturing environment built upon trust, respect, and fostering strong relationships!
Fullerton Joint Union High School District Public Education
Profile
- Fullerton Joint Union High School District Celebrates its 125th Anniversary in 2018Fullerton Joint Union High School District was founded in 1893. The district serves families in the cities of Fullerton, La Habra, La Habra Heights, Buena Park, and small sections of Brea and Whittier. There are currently approximately 13,500 students in the Fullerton Joint Union High School District, and it is currently led by Superintendent Steve McLaughlin, and School Board Members Marilyn Buchi, Joanne Fawley, Chester Jeng, Lauren Klatzker, and Vicki Calhoun.
The district started with just one high school, Fullerton Union. The school’s first classroom was a rented room on the second floor of the Fullerton Elementary School building and that was enough to house the eight students, which constituted the first year’s enrollment. In 1908, Fullerton Union’s enrollment increased and to accommodate the growth, the school was moved to a new building on West Commonwealth Avenue.
Fullerton’s enrollment continued to grow and within two years a new building was built to ease the overcrowding. Due to schoolwork disruption by the numerous Santa Fe trains that roared by each day and the need for more room, in 1911, the present site of Fullerton was purchased one block east of Harbor Boulevard known as Spadra back then.
Plummer Auditorium was built in 1930-32 and continues to serve as a landmark with its Mission Revival style of architecture and its original ironwork, which was made by students on the campus. It was named after teacher, principal, and superintendent of the time, Louis E. Plummer.
The next school to be built by the district was La Habra High School located in the city of La Habra on Highlander Ave with the athletic fields bordering Whittier Boulevard. La Habra opened in 1954 and graduated its first class in 1956. La Habra’s mascot is the Scottish Highlander and from 1954-1970 La Habra had a bagpipe band and Scottish dance team. The highlander influence is seen throughout the campus with many buildings and walkways named after Scottish landmarks.
LHHS is a California Distinguished School and National Blue Ribbon School. La Habra High School absorbed a majority of the students and staff members from nearby Lowell High School when it closed in June 1980.
The next school to be built by the district using the exact same design as La Habra was Buena Park High School which opened its doors with 508 students on September 11, 1956. Buena Park was the third school in the district. The school was made possible by a bond measure voted by citizens in the district to serve students in Buena Park, La Palma, and West Fullerton.
Under the leadership of its first principal from 1956 – 1974, Richard Spaulding, the enrollment increased to 2,200. The Buena Park student body recognized Richard Spaulding for his 18 years of service as principal by renaming the football stadium in his honor. Buena Park High School enjoys high status in academics, athletics and the performing arts.
The fourth school to be built in 1959, again using the same design as La Habra and Buena Park, was Sunny Hills High School located in Fullerton. The campus is situated on 42 acres in west Fullerton. Sunny Hills has been an International Baccalaureate School since 1987 and hosts one of the strongest IB programs in California. Sunny Hills High School has been recognized three times as a California Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School.
Lowell High School was the fifth high school in the Fullerton Joint Union High School District from September 1961 until June 1980. Sadly, for many, in 1980 Lowell HS was closed due to declining student enrollment. Lowell High School was located on Amber Valley Drive, Whittier. The site was purchased and now is occupied by Southern California University of Health Sciences.
Troy High School opened in 1964 and is acclaimed for its many programs, including Troy Tech and International Baccalaureate. The school was the sixth high school in the Fullerton Joint Union High School District. Currently, 2700 students attend Troy HS making it the largest of the district schools. Troy has the distinction of winning the most national titles (12 as of 2018) in the Science Olympiad. Troy is one of 59 schools in the country to be awarded a New American High Schools status by the United States Department of Education. Troy is also well known for the girls’ basketball team which won the state CIF Division II Title in 2003, 2005, and 2006.
In 1966, Sonora High School opened on Palm Street in La Habra, in north Orange County. At its highest enrollment, Sonora served almost 2,000 students. The school has an International Baccalaureate program, honors, and Advanced Placement (AP) options. The Sonora campus is a one-of-a-kind design with the campus enclosed in one large indoor campus. In 2007, an additional building was added, making for the only additional set of rooms not under the same roof as the remaining campus. Sonora has been named a California Distinguished school four times and the sports programs have won many CIF championship titles.
La Vista High School founded in 1966, is the district’s continuation high school. It has been named a Model School by the California Department of Education for the last twelve years. This is the highest honor a continuation high school can receive. La Vista specializes in students who are behind in credit. LVHS operates on a quarter system which allows students the opportunity to accelerate the pace in which they earn credit.
La Sierra High School founded in 1980 is an alternative education high school located on the same campus as La Vista High School. These two schools share a beautiful new campus built in 2008. La Sierra is the district’s alternative high school. Alternative schools have more flexibility in their organization, which allows for more variety, innovation and individualization in students’ educational programs. There are six different programs operating under the umbrella of La Sierra designed for students of all academic levels and abilities: 10th Grade Opportunity, Home Hospital, iSierra Online Academy, Adult Transition, Endeavor High School, and The Kate Waller Barrett Academy
The district has been proud to serve the students, parents, and members of the communities of Fullerton, La Habra, La Habra Heights, Buena Park, and small sections of Brea and Whittier for 125 years and is pleased to share this milestone Anniversary with the past and current staff members, the alumni and current students and parents, and all community members who share the pride of the Fullerton Joint Union High School District.
Happy 125th Anniversary to the Fullerton Joint Union High School District.

- The Fullerton School District’s Dual Language Academy is for all students to reach high levels of academic achievement, develop biliteracy and bilingualism, and cultivate cross-cultural competencies needed to succeed in a multicultural society and global economy.

Located in Orange County, California, the Irvine Unified School District comprises a diverse population of more than 36,000 TK-12 students in one early childhood learning center, 24 elementary schools, five K-8 schools, six middle schools, five high schools and one alternative high school and two virtual academies. Since becoming a school district in 1972, IUSD schools have been nationally recognized for comprehensive programs in academics, the arts, and athletics. Through a partnership with talented and caring teachers, engaged students, involved parents, and supportive business and community leaders, student and district performance continually exceed state and national standards.
MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
The Irvine Unified School District was founded, more than 50 years ago, by forward-thinking educators who settled for nothing short of world-class schools and supporting choices for parents. While times and technologies have changed, our core objective remains the same: to provide the highest quality educational experience we can envision.
I have been working in IUSD since 1997, and this is my 13th year as superintendent. I feel a tremendous sense of pride and humility when I consider my legendary predecessors, including Stan Corey, Dean Waldfogel, and Gwen Gross. At the same time, I have come to recognize that the strength of our district is its ability to leverage the individual talents of its stakeholders, including our amazing teachers, our dedicated support personnel and our remarkable Board of Education. Fittingly, the two letters at the center of IUSD spell “US,” and it takes all of our unique gifts and capacities to pave a path of continuous improvement.
I should note that we are not alone in this effort. IUSD is fortunate to serve a community that truly understands the importance of education. Our PTA members volunteer hundreds of thousands of hours each year, and our parents and families nurture learning at home by setting aside time for their children to read and study. Meanwhile, we have tremendous partners that fill critical gaps and enhance our programs, including the Irvine Public Schools Foundation, the Irvine Company and the City of Irvine. And not enough can be said of our students, who exhibit poise, dedication and wisdom beyond their years.
Looking ahead, we know that technology will continue to play a pivotal role in enhancing classroom instruction, and advancements will be introduced thoughtfully and strategically to empower our staff and to leverage their expertise in nurturing student engagement and achievement. Though technology will never take the place of great teaching, it can be a transformative tool in enhancing educational outcomes.
We are committed to ensuring all IUSD schools are equipped with the necessary features and resources to promote intellectual risk-taking, creativity, communication and critical thinking. Our focus is to create a rich learning environment that will enable students and teachers to learn and teach in new and innovative ways, so that our students are 21st century college and career ready. One such resource stems from the passage of Measure E, a school facilities improvement measure, passed by Irvine voters in June 2016 to modernize the District’s aging schools.
The next school year will no doubt bring untold challenges and opportunities for our district. Yet I eagerly add my confidence to the other stakeholders in this organization that we have the ability to meet those challenges and to seize those opportunities, knowing that we have the right people and partnerships in place to fulfill our promise to maximize the educational experience of each student entrusted to us.
This is, after all, a new year, with new possibilities. And it’s just the latest chapter in the ongoing story of IUSD.

The Orange Unified School District serves approximately 28,000 students in grades kindergarten through 12th and encompasses all or part of the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, Orange, Santa Ana, and Villa Park. In 1953, the citizens of the area voted to form a “unified” school district, combining the original five elementary districts with the high school district into one unified district, now known as the Orange Unified School District. The Orange Unified School District has a long history of excellence that continues to grow and be enriched by the accomplishments of its students, teachers, staff and community.
Mission – Our Intention
In partnership with our community, we will provide a safe, equitable, and innovative culture of learning for each scholar to have a competitive EDGE as a leader.
VISION – Our Commitment
Inspiring our learners of today to be purposeful leaders of tomorrow.
CORE VALUES – Our Foundation
- Equity – We promote inclusive and culturally relevant environments by supporting the social-emotional and intellectual needs of all.
- Integrity – We embrace a culture of ethical and transparent decision making and actions.
- Respect – We advocate for strong, compassionate relationships that appreciate the unique qualities of our diverse community.
- Excellence – We strive for the highest standards in all endeavors by deliberately pursuing continuous growth and innovation.
History of the Orange Unified School District
The following was written in 1988 by Ruth C. Evans, Orange Unified School District Board of Education Trustee from July 1969 – December 1989.
The Constitution of the State of California charges the Legislature with the obligation of providing a program of free public education. In 1852 the State Legislature set forth the conditions by which local schools could be established: “Whenever any town, city, or corporated village shall contain over 60 children between the ages of 5 and 18 years, the legal voters of such town, city, or village may divide (establish) said district…” From that time forward, school districts have been established throughout the state.
The early settlers of the Santa Ana Valley valued and understood the importance of public schools. The community of Orange (originally Richland) was established in 1871 and the following year the Richland School District began operation.
As the area surrounding Orange grew, the various communities began establishing their own school districts. Olive School District was created June 6, 1876. Mountain View (Villa Park) began in 1880. Silverado schools began operation about 1881, and El Modena by 1887.
The surrounding communities eventually joined together, first to establish the Orange Union High School District, and later to form the Orange Unified School District. A brief review of the establishment of the five elementary districts–Orange, Olive, Villa Park, Silverado, and El Modena–follows.
ORANGE
The Orange (originally Richland) School District was created February 5, 1872. Until a school could be built, the children were taught in a home. Mr. Alfred Chapman, one of the founders of the town, gave 2½ acres of land located on the southeast corner of Lemon and Sycamore streets to the town for a school. The first school in Orange was typical of the school buildings of the day. It was a one-room white wood building, about 24 feet wide and 26 feet long. The school was finished in June 1872. Seventy students came to the school the first day it opened. Stephen McPherson was the first teacher. By the end of the school year there were over 100 students at the school and another room was added to the building. Other schools were built in the next few years.
By 1885 the District had 232 census children, 178 pupils were enrolled, and the average daily attendance was 123.
The Orange Public School burned in April 1886. A new brick building with eight classrooms was built to replace the first.
An early Los Angeles City and County Directory contained the following statement about the community of Orange. “The education and culture of the people of this favored locality is sufficient assurance that the interest of education will never be allowed to suffer in their midst.”
OLIVE
The children who lived at Burruel Point (Olive) traveled to Orange to attend schools, but the people wanted their own school. The Olive School District was organized June 6, 1876. A one-room schoolhouse was built on the flat land nearby. It was about one-half mile from the main part of town, near Heim Street. A few years later, developers planned to build the town of St. James. The Olive School was on land that would be part of that town. Although the town of St. James was never built, the people decided to move their school house. In 1893 the school was moved to Olive.
In 1895 a white two-story schoolhouse was built. It loomed up on the side of the hill overlooking the valley. Some people thought the building was extravagant, as “the district did not need a big schoolhouse, the rooms of which were not all needed.” A new mission-style schoolhouse was built in 1919. Additional classrooms were added to the school in 1964, after it became part of the Orange Unified School District.
VILLA PARK
The area known as Villa Park had no name until 1881 when the Mountain View School District was established. The first school classes in the Villa Park area were held in a shed on the James M. Smith ranch. A two-room school, which opened in 1883, was built. It was located on land at the corner of Lincoln and Center streets.
In 1887 Mountain View’s application for a post office was denied because there was already another town with this name in the state. The following spring an application for a post office with the name Villa Park was granted. In 1910 the people changed the name of their school district to correspond with the name of their community. By that time there were 75 students, a 660-volume library, and a total property value of $4,425.
SILVERADO
It is not clear when the first schools began in the canyons. At first, the children met in homes. By the 1881-82 school year, the Silverado School District was formed. Records show that by 1907 the school district had lapsed–later it began operating again.
The first school building in the canyons was a small one-room structure which could be moved. Children from the various canyons came to the school. The school building was moved to the canyon that had the most children. Some years the building was in Silverado Canyon, other years it was in Modjeska Canyon.
During the 1930s the school was made bigger, and the outside was plastered with stucco. In 1957, after joining the Orange Unified School District, a new school was built.
EL MODENA
The El Modena School District began in 1887. During the 1888-89 school year, the people built a new schoolhouse, the cost of which was included in the school budget of $7,969.63. That year the District showed an enrollment of 41 students. The library consisted of 258 volumes.
A neighboring school district, Santiago (established 1879), was later included in the El Modena School District. According to Don Meadows, a local historian, the Santiago District was located by the Santiago Creek with its school near the present location of the Rehabilitation Center at La Veta and Tustin avenues.
At one time the El Modena School District operated segregated schools.
THE ORANGE UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT
No public high schools were in operation within the Santa Ana Valley until after Orange County was created in 1889. The first secondary school in what is now Orange County was a private school, the Santa Ana Academy, which opened August 7, 1876.
In 1891 the California Legislature passed the County High School Bill. The bill allowed local counties to decide whether to have a county high school or union high schools serving two or more adjacent elementary districts. Shortly after the bill was passed the County Board of Supervisors set an election, to be held August 29, 1891, to determine the desires of the people. The Orange County Board of Education favored the county high school. However, the measure calling for a county high school was defeated 1,026 to 749, and the way was opened far union high school districts throughout the county. Four high school districts were established shortly thereafter. They were: Santa Ana High School, August 1891; Fullerton Union High School, June 1893; Anaheim Union High School, 1898; and Orange Union High School, June 1903.
The Orange Union High School District included the Orange, El Modena, Villa Park, and Olive elementary districts. Silverado joined later. A five-acre tract on the northeast corner of Glassell and Palm was purchased. The first building of the high school campus was started in 1904 and occupied the following year. Prior to that time the high school classes were held in a store building on south Glassell Street.
Each step of development of the high school required elections, first to establish the high school district and select the trustees, then several bond issues to purchase property and build buildings. Commercial and science buildings were built in 1913, an administration/auditorium unit in 1921, and a cafeteria building in 1928. The gymnasium and stadium were built in 1925 and 1928, respectively.
After the earthquake in 1933, although there was no visual damage to the buildings, their safety was questioned. A representative of the State Division of Architecture inspected the buildings. He found that only the cafeteria and gymnasium were structurally sound, and on December 19, 1947, his office declared the Orange Union High School campus “unsafe.” The State Fire Marshall’s Office also inspect d the buildings and found them to be unsafe.
The Board took appropriate steps to determine the cost and advisability of bringing the buildings up to code. Ultimately, it was decided that an entirely new campus should be built.
In 1950 a bond election for $1,250,000 was successful and plans were made to construct a completely new school. The chosen site was located on approximately 30 acres at the northeast corner of Walnut and Shaffer. Over the next few years, a new campus was built by Allison Honer Company of Santa Ana and was ready to be occupied by mid-May 1953.
ORANGE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
During this same time another important change was taking place. Certain elements of the District were urging a unification of the five elementary districts and the high school into one unified district. A special election was called for October 19, 1948, to determine the will of the people. The unification measure failed by a vote of 539 for unification, 753 against.
The issue of unification surfaced again a few years later. A Citizens’ Advisory Committee was established; a series of meetings were held in the community and eventually an election was set for September 30, 1952, to decide on the question of unification. The unification measure passed 1,884 to 319. At the same time, the voters approved a measure taking over the debts of the old elementary school districts. The Orange Unified School District was born! The unified school district became official July 1, 1953–just a few months after the high school had moved to its new location. (Chapman College of Los Angeles bought the original high school campus and moved there in 1954.)
Seven trustees were elected to govern the new District, including representatives from each of the five elementary districts–Orange, El Modena, Villa Park, Olive, and Silverado. Harold Kibby, Superintendent of the Orange Union High School District, was selected as Superintendent of the new unified district.
Orange was the third unified district to be formed in Orange County. At the time of unification, it had an average daily attendance of 2,476 students. It has grown to be the 21st largest district in the State of California. Since its inception the Orange Unified School District has been recognized as an institution offering quality education for students of all levels and abilities.

Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District Public Education
Profile
The History of Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District
The Placentia School District dates back to 1874. A one-room schoolhouse was established by pioneers who – with bravery, hard work and dreams – paved the way for our present-day award-winning education system. All of this was brought about by the untiring efforts of educationally minded settlers who were visionaries, and who truly valued education. The district wishes to express its gratitude to all those who vividly remembered details and recorded stories and events. We realize that this material is not complete, and this is only the continuation of a long-standing tradition. The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) is “Where the Future Happens.” The completion of this rich history is left to those who come after us.
Here is our story …
COMMUNITY/DISTRICT
1834
A land grant of 13,328 acres – part of which is present-day Yorba Linda – was given to Bernardo Yorba by the Spanish government. He called it “Rancho Cañón de Santa Ana.” After his death in 1858, the land was divided between his wife and children. Some of the land was sold and eventually named Yorba Linda – “Yorba” being the last name of its original owner, and “Linda,” which means “beautiful” in Spanish.
1849
Gold Rush brought many people California.
1850
California admitted to the Union.
1874
Twelve families settled along the Anaheim ditch. The community developed as its population became more established. Mr. William McFadden settled in the Placentia area. He was a teacher at the Santa Ana School, and a county superintendent of the Los Angeles County Schools from 1869 to 1873. Mr. McFadden helped form the El Cajon School District and had a one-room schoolhouse erected at his own expense. It was a plain building with two doors, both on one side, and a window on either end. Students sat on crude wooden benches. The El Cajon School opened with two teachers: Ms. Minnie Walker and Mr. F.K. McDowell. Students: Felipe Yorba, Adeline and Felipa Yorba, Prudencio Yorba, several Peraltas, Taylor Bush, and his sisters. Trustees: William Shanklin, R.H. Gilman and William McFadden. Mr. McFadden also served as assessor and collector when a $500 tax was levied by vote on Dec. 26, 1874, for building and school purposes. The cost of the school, including labor, was $401.54. The school was on the Santa Ana River near the Yorba Bridge.
1876
The El Cajon School was moved with horses and wagons to the northeast corner of Placentia and Chapman avenues.
1878
Placentia School District formed. The district included the northern half of the El Cajon School District, in addition to annexed sections from the districts of Anaheim and Fullerton.
1879
An annual report reported 41 census children. Enrollment: 26 children. Average daily attendance: 14.
1884
The inadequacy of the one-room schoolhouse became apparent, and a two-room schoolhouse was constructed on the southeast corner of Placentia and Chapman avenues. The old building was abandoned but stood in place until 1940. One could almost imagine that it stood proudly as if it knew of the importance it claimed in opening the path to education in the community.
1898
The two-room schoolhouse was replaced with a two-story school building with the help of George Key. The lower floor was divided into two rooms, and the upper story was used as an auditorium. Many community dances were held in this auditorium. Its name was changed to Placentia Grammar School.
1889
Orange County withdrew from Los Angeles County. There were 33 school districts in Orange County at the time, 23 of which had less than 100 students enrolled.
1908
Yorba Linda laid out as a town site.
1911
Yorba Linda School District formed with 3,500 acres within its boundaries. A one-room schoolhouse welcomed students who formerly attended neighboring Olinda School. Two teachers: Miss Amanda Longenecker and Miss Olive Talbert.
1912
First Yorba Linda School District PTA organized. Membership: 14.
1914
Two new school districts – Richfield School District and Commonwealth School District – both formed.
1915
Richfield School District joins Placentia School District and changes its name to Placentia Union School District.
1916
First Placentia Union School District PTA organized by Mrs. Nellie Cline. Other PTAs soon organized. Annual dues: 50 cents.
1921
Commonwealth School District joins Placentia Union School District.
1926
City of Placentia incorporated. Population: 1,300. Acres: 640.
1933
Placentia Union School District petitions to withdraw from the Fullerton Union High School District to become the Placentia High School District. On July 8, Placentia residents appeared before the state Board of Education with a petition signed by 860 people. Valencia High School opens using Bradford School rooms.
1936
Placentia Unified School District formed on July 1 as a result of legislation allowing unification and the addition of a high school.
1942
With the onset of World War II, enrollment dropped as residents moved to areas with defense plants.
1946
Enrollment increased after the end of World War II.
1989
Placentia Unified School District and Yorba Linda School District merge to become the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District.

Many times, the river was at flood stage and the pupils had to pull each other across the current by means of ropes tied about their waists. Several times small groups came down from the hills to the houses begging for food, which was always given.
An election was held in 1883 for $3,000 in bonds at 8 percent. All votes were aye.
In 1876 the school was moved with horses and wagons to the northeast corner of Placentia and Chapman and the name was changed to Placentia School.
In 1884, the one-room schoolhouse was replaced by a two-room schoolhouse.
1884 Placentia School
2nd story added in 1898
By 1904, the school had 90 students.
3 teachers: Mr. Smith principal / teacher taught seventh, eighth and ninth grades; Miss Stella Stanley taught the intermediate grades and Miss Cora Evans taught the primary department. Most schools included the ninth grades because there were few high schools and the majority of the pupils did not go beyond elementary school.
In 1913, this school was replaced by a school building with eight rooms on Bradford Avenue which was named Bradford School.

Four students who walked three miles originally were attending Olinda School. More students moved into the area justifying the establishment of a school.
At a public meeting at Conley’s hay barn (later known as Casa Loma) community members gathered to discuss providing a building for school purposes. As a result of this meeting, $248.50 were pledged for the purpose of constructing a permanent school. In 1911, a bond issue passed for $8,000 for the construction of a permanent school building. Mrs. Mabel M. Paine was hired as the first principal. The permanent school building was completed in 1926. In 1926, a tax election of $8,400 provided school equipment. In 1940, bonds passed for the rehabilitation of the school.
School demolished in 1954 and re-built as Richard Nixon School.
1912 Bradford School

This school replaced the school building on Placentia and Chapman Avenues.
The eight-room school building, built with a $44,000 bond issue passed in 1911, had an auditorium with balcony that could accommodate 600 people.
In close succession, the following buildings were added to these two main buildings: a wing on the arts building to house kindergarten, music room, administration building and a domestic science building. The administration building was first divided into two lunchrooms with two large fireplaces and later made into a home for Superintendent Riddlebarger.
Fire in 1929
Second larger fire in 1934
Re-built in 1935
Up to this time, Placentia students who wanted further training attended Fullerton High School. However, a strong desire for a separate high school became evident the morning of July 8, 1933 when Placentia residents appeared before the State Board of Education with a petition to establish Valencia High School. The first graduating class consisted of one student, Roy Tillery who on May 2, 1934, played all four parts in a one-act play called “The Mortgage on the Farm.” The first commencement took place on June 12 with Vierling Kersey, State Superintendent of Instruction, delivering the address for the occasion.

School Namesakes
EL CAMINO REAL HIGH SCHOOL
El Camino Alternative High School is named for an aspect of our local heritage as school district policy proscribes. El Camino Real was the name the padres gave to the road that connected the missions that they established from the Mexican border to the Oregon border. Each mission was one day’s foot travel apart on the El Camino Real highway. In English, it means “The Road of the King.” It seems appropriate for the school that provides each student his path to success.
EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL
Consistent with the school district policy to name high schools for our cultural heritage, the school’s name reflects the exploration of California by Spanish and Mexican armies. The El Dorado is the legendary South American city sought by the early Spanish Explorers.
The school district purchased the southern portion of the Brower Ranch on which to build its second high school. Mrs. Ysidora McFadden Brower was the granddaughter of William McFadden, who came to area in 1869. Along with ranching, McFadden taught school, paid for the first school building in this area and served as Los Angeles Superintendent of Schools.
El Dorado opened with an enrollment that incorporated middle school students; those students went on to be part of the school’s graduating class in 1969. This inclusion was only temporary; Tuffree Middle School was in the planning stage.
ESPERANZA HIGH SCHOOL
Consistent with school district policy, Esperanza High School is named for our cultural heritage. This Spanish word, Esperanza, means HOPE in English. The word hope characterizes the motivation of settlers to this area, whether as early as the Yorba and the Ontiveros families, or those who came to make possible the citrus and oil industries.
VALENCIA HIGH SCHOOL
Consistent with school district policy, Valencia High School is named for our cultural heritage. Valenica is well known as a city and port in E. Spain. Probably for this area, it is best known as the name for a very important variety of orange – Valencia. Sharing honors with the winter producing Naval oranges, the Valencia oranges were the summer crop. Richard Gilman, of Placentia, in 1880, budded five acres of Valencia seedlings. He found that conditions were perfect in Placentia for the Valencia orange to succeed. With forty acres, his was the first commercial Valencia orange ranch.
One of the buildings on the Valencia High School campus is part of the old Bradford School that survived a fire. At Valencia High School’s beginning, the students shared the campus with those students attending Bradford School and with school district offices.
The site of Valencia High School is on part of the original Ontiveros Land Grant.
YORBA LINDA HIGH SCHOOL
To memorialize our local heritage, Yorba Linda High School has the same name given to the original settler, Jose Antonio Yorba, who had a Spanish Land Grant awarded to him for his service with the Portola Expedition north from Mexico into what is now California, USA.

District History
Tustin Unified School District
~History~
A tradition of excellence in education began with the creation of the Tustin community in the late 1800s. The district was established July 1, 1972, upon unification of the Tustin Elementary School District and Tustin Union High School District.
A Legacy of Excellence
The legacy of Tustin’s schools’ dates back to the 1860s – two decades before Orange County became independent of Los Angeles.
Education was a priority of Tustin’s namesake and community developer Columbus Tustin, a Petaluma carriage maker who purchased 839 acres in the 1860s and plotted streets and square blocks through a terrain of wild mustard and sycamore trees.
In 1872, he built a one-room schoolhouse and donated it to the community. Originally called Sycamore School District because of the abundant sycamore trees in the foothills, its first trustees were elected by 11 voters. Residents also approved a tax rate to provide $740 to build a larger schoolhouse and $300 for school supplies. The district’s first teacher, Miss Annie Cozad, was paid $60 per month; its second teacher came five years later.
Tustin’s plans for a large city were temporarily waylaid in 1877 when Southern Pacific Railroad built its southern terminus in Santa Ana instead of Tustin. Columbus Tustin died in 1883 just as the community’s population began to grow with new homes, stores, places of worship, and an addition to the school.
The school district was renamed the Tustin School District with the creation of the County of Orange in 1889. After the turn of the century, Tustin grew as the upscale residential suburb of Santa Ana, the county seat of government. Tustin’s homes and businesses reflected that upscale lifestyle and so did its schools.
Growth in the early 20th Century mirrored that of many Orange County communities with larger schools built to accommodate an expanding population. Tustin Union High School opened in 1922 and served five elementary school districts: Tustin, San Joaquin, Trabuco, El Toro, and Laguna.
Residents voted for unification in 1972 and Tustin’s elementary and high schools were unified as a single district – Tustin Unified School District.
Today the District serves over 24,000 students at 18 elementary schools, a K-8 school, 5 middle schools, and 4 high schools. Its administrative center is located at 300 South C Street in Tustin.
District Administration Center and School Bell
The Tustin Unified School District offices are in the remodeled grammar school auditorium, built in 1950. After the grammar school was vacated, the elementary district administration moved from the Little Red School House into this building. The bell, cast in 1887, originally hung in the old Victorian schoolhouse and today welcomes visitors to the District Administration Center at 300 South C Street in Tustin.

With Our Exceptional Service You Will Enjoy an All-Exclusive Appointment Without the Stress & Pressure of A Larger Salon.
Thank you for making it to my page! My dream of opening up a Bridal Boutique became a reality for me back in 2018, when I finally decided it was the time. It all started when I was on the hunt to find my own dream dress. I had a completely different perception of what this experience was supposed to be like. Store after store my disappoint grew more and more. The service was far from exceptional, and the majority of the stores were overstuffed with dresses and crowded with so many people.
It was a very stressful environment on top of the stress I was already feeling from planning a wedding! I didn’t feel special walking into many of the boutiques especially since most of them didn’t look like what I imagined them to be. I took all the cons from my experience and turned them into the perfect little boutique! At Layah’s you and your bride tribe will walk into a beautiful, relaxing boutique exclusively just for you for your entire session! Our dresses are quality vs quantity, you will see a unique selection of hand-picked dresses without breaking the bank! As for the service I will let you experience it for yourself!
Stop by our location and take a look!!!!

Love and Lace Bridal Bridal Shops
Profile
At Love & Lace, you’ll be comfortable loved & celebrated.
We believe every bride deserves to feel special and to express their own individual style through their dress. Let one of our experienced.
stylists help you find your dream wedding gown.
Who is the Love & Lace bride?
She is confident and not afraid to stand up for herself. She is effortless and laid back. She has a degree of edge to her, and is proud of it. She is quirky, funny, boisterous, quiet and possibly/most likely has some cool tattoos (we LOVE hearing the stories behind those!). She is not overly fussy.
she is simple and minimalist. She is a strong woman that speaks her mind and doesn’t need tons of opinions to decide on her behalf. She knows herself, loves herself and is damn proud of who she is.
How it all began…
Our salon was created to empower brides to stay true to themselves.
Ramona opened Love and Lace out of a desire to provide a space for brides wanting something different, somewhere where they could stay true to themselves and be surrounded with women that empowered them to do that. We do happy dances and cartwheels when a bride utters the magic words “this gown just feels like ME”! Nothing makes us happier than helping a bride find her voice by choosing the gown that most expresses her personality – whatever that may be!
Ramona Southard
SALON OWNER
“I got into bridal because I wanted to lean into the creative aspect of my personality. Along the way, I fell in love with what this entire industry is about and all the bad-ass women I have met along the way! I cannot imagine not being surrounded by these strong, independent and empowered women – it is one of the things that I want to instill daily in my young daughter: take on the world, do what makes you happy and be yourself every step of the way!”
Mariposa Boutique Bridal Shops
Profile
ALL ABOUT MARIPOSA BRIDAL BOUTIQUE
Since opening our doors in 2005, Mariposa Bridal Boutique has taken great care in hand-selecting gorgeous bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, and wedding accessories. Our stylists attend industry events and travel the country to attend bridal designer fashion shows, allowing us to stay on point with current trends as well as classic, timeless styles. As a result, we remain invigorated and inspired to share that passion for beautiful things with every bride that walks through our doors. We can’t wait to share our time and experience with you and become an important part of allowing your beauty to shine through on your Wedding Day.
OUR STORY
After facing frustration with the entire process of ordering and receiving her own wedding gown, owner Kacey Taormina realized that there was much room for improvement in the wedding gown industry, which inspired her to open the doors to Mariposa Bridal Boutique.
Kacey, along with her detail-oriented and well-seasoned stylists, have created an experience that brides in Southern California continue to rave about. Our goal is to bring joy and lightness in a process that typically tends to be muddled with stress and frustration. We do that by listening attentively,
As a bride, you have a year’s worth of decisions to make but we are here to help you gracefully check that wedding attire box which (in our opinion) is the most important decision to make (besides your groom!).
Designer Gown Samples Available for Purchase Off the Rack!
Is your wedding date right around the corner? Want to keep your price point as low as possible? Don’t worry because Mariposa Boutique carries a variety of designer bridal gowns available for purchase off the rack. Sample gowns have been tried on in our boutique, and some gowns may have some normal wear and tear. For this reason, we are offering them for up to 65% off! Keep in mind that sample gowns have not been preserved, altered or dry cleaned. Any damages can be fixed with a professional bridal seamstress which we are happy to provide referrals for.
Sample sizes range from sizes 12-26. Please note that bridal sizing does run small, so please refer to the designer’s size chart for sizing information. Most gowns will require some alterations as most of us don’t fall into one size, so we recommend choosing the size based off your largest body measurement.
Happy Shopping!

Harbour Surfboards Surf Shops

THE HARBOUR STORY
Almost 60 years ago, Rich Harbour’s prized, albeit beat-up and used surfboard was stolen from his parents’ garage, forcing him to shape one of his own as a replacement. It wasn’t long before many of the locals were asking Rich to make them surfboards. Soon Harbour’s boards were gracing the pages of Surfer Magazine underneath the feet of the era’s most respected surfers.
While a lot has changed since that first board, Harbour Surfboards remains the home of the world’s oldest surfboard manufacturing shop at the same continuous Seal Beach, Ca., location.
Since 1959 Harbour Surfboards has hand crafted more than 32,000 surfboards, and counting, with quality craftsmanship and attention to design as the philosophy behind each surfboard. Harbour’s position as a trend-setter in the industry and evolving designs are still going strong. And today, both new and vintage Harbour Surfboards are collected and prized by enthusiasts around the world eager to grab a piece of true surfing history.
Harbour Surfboards is located at 329 Main Street in Seal Beach, Calif. It has offered the best in classic and contemporary surfboards since 1959.

The nation’s first imprint collection of legendary surfers, the Surfers’ Hall of Fame celebrated its first induction in 1997 inside of specialty retailer Huntington Surf and Sport where several slabs remain. Four years later with the blessing of the City Council and a stunning bronze statue of Duke Kahanamoku serving as a backdrop, the ceremony moved outside to the corner of PCH and Main, less than 100 feet from the famed Huntington Beach Pier, site of the U.S. Open of Surfing.
The Pai Family along with the Surfers’ Hall of Fame is steadfast in their passion to continue this legacy of paying tribute to those who contribute greatly to the sport of surfing.
The Surfers’ Hall of Fame induction ceremony pays tribute to those individuals who have made an indelible mark on the sport, industry, and culture of surfing. Annually, tens of thousands of visitors travel to Huntington Beach’s downtown area and literally walk in the footsteps of surfing superstars and legends from several eras including Laird Hamilton, Andy Irons, Jack O’Neill, Robert August, Bob Hurley, Sean Collins, Kelly Slater, Lisa Andersen, Gerry Lopez, George Downing, Ben Aipa, Shane Dorian, Greg Noll, Corky Carroll, Rick Fignetti, Shaun Tomson, Rob Machado, Sumo Sato, Timmy Turner, Ryan Turner, Casey Wheat, Shawn Stussy, Rabbit Kekai, Bethany Hamilton, Mick Fanning, Brett Simpson and many more, who are already immortalized in cement.

KANVAS BY KATIN BEGINS
In the summer of 1954, Nancy and Walter Katin opened a small boat cover business in the quaint beach town of Surfside, California. Withstanding rigorous testing and utilizing waxed-nylon thread and nickel grommets, the Katin’s canvas boat covers were considered bulletproof. Taking note of the sturdy canvas covers, locals soon sought alternate uses for the Katin’s products.

1957
CALIFORNIA’S FIRST SURF TRUNK
After receiving requests from a select few friends, Walter constructed some custom boat shorts using the same canvas he constructed his boat covers from. While impressed with the short’s design, Walter chose to continue his focus on the canvas boat covers. When one day, a local teen walked into the shop requesting a new kind of short made specifically for surfing. The young surfer explained his struggles with surfing in cut-off jeans, and how the denim threads would quickly break, leaving him nearly nude when exiting the water. This determined teenager’s name was Corky Carroll, who unbeknownst to Walter, would go on to be one of the world’s first professional surfers.
The custom surf trunks Walter made for Corky would become one of California’s first pair of surf trunks. Word soon spread of the trunks durability and the shop was soon flooded with young surfers wanting a pair. Overwhelmed with the demand, Walter sought the help of Sato Hughes, a skillful local seamstress.

SURFING REACHES THE MAINSTREAM
By the mid-1960s, surfing had reached mainstream popularity and the Katins were firmly entrenched in the surfing community, known for creating the best surf trunks in the market. Professional surfers by the likes of Gerry Lopez (HI), Donald Takayama (HI), Gary Proper (US) Midget Farrelly (AU), Mark Richards (AU), Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew (AU) Shaun Tomson (ZA), Peter Townend (AU), Reno Abellira (HI) and Mike Purpus (US) all wore the trunks out of respect for their high quality and their respect for the Katins.

1977
THE KATIN PRO/AM
After Walter passed away in 1967, Nancy expanded her involvement in the surf world by providing surfing scholarships. Nancy launched the annual Katin PRO/AM Team Challenge in Huntington Beach in 1977, and over the years, notable winners included Tom Curren (US), Martin Potter (UK), Sunny Garcia (HI), Shaun Tomson (ZA) and Kelly Slater (US).
1977 Katin Team Challenge spread in Surfer Magazine, 1977.

NANCY REJECTS MULTIPLE OFFERS
By the early 1980s, the surf industry had officially skyrocketed, and many manufacturers were quick to take advantage of the trend. Though there were many offers made to Nancy to sell her business, she was determined to keep Katin a cherished surf haven for all. With the help of Sato, Katin continued making surf trunks in the back room of the Surfside Kanvas by Katin store, selling them up front and relying on the existing loyal network of surf shops for additional distribution.

“THE FIRST LADY OF SURFING” PASSES
In the winter of 1986 Nancy passed away, leaving the surf industry and all of her fans with a heavy heart. However, when Nancy passed, she left the company to Sato Hughes, her loyal seamstress since 1961. Sato and her son Glenn have since continued to run the original surf shop with the same love, dedication, and care as Nancy and Walter, sewing custom surf trunks with the same quality, durability and good looks since 1954.

TODAY
QUALITY, DURABILITY & GOOD LOOKS
Having been born by the beach and raised along the California coast, Katin remains a staple of Southern California culture. Several trunks and summers later, Katin continues to take pride in its title as California’s first brand to make surf trunks, and continues its commitment to Quality, Durability, and Good Looks. See you out there!

Russell Surfboards Surf Shops
Profile
In the summer of 1963, Robert Russell Brown got kicked out of his dad’s garage for making a mess. Resin, foam dust and wood shavings littered the floor of the garage that had become the post-surf hang out spot for Russell and his friend Don Anderson. They had already shaped several boards together and weren’t planning on stopping anytime soon. Russell moved his mess around a few times before setting up a shaping bay in an old naval shipyard on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach. His skills progressed quickly, due in part to the fact that his shaping room was between surf legends Pat Curren and Joe Quigg. He’d work on boards after school and into the night and sell them out of a truck with “Surfboards by Russell” painted on the side.
By the time Russ graduated, business was really picking up. It made sense to him to make board building his career. In 1967, Russell Surfboards was formally opened on Balboa Blvd just a stone’s throw away from Blackies, the historic bar and surf spot. The shortboard revolution was creating a renewed spirit of experimentation, and Russ was Building a team of the best, most progressive board builders around. Guys like Mike O’day, Bruce Jones, Bobby (BASA) Allen, Randy Lidau and the infamous Paul and Vinny Sides all came to work for Russell Surfboards during this period. Even the great Dale Velzy shaped a few balsa wood guns for the shop. While those guys built some of the most progressive boards in California, a growing contingent of local surfers started riding the boards in whatever waves they could find.
Over the next several years, the Russell crew and their product became known as the brotherhood. With the cleanest boards around and plethora of surfing talent riding the boards, a Russell Surfboard was the board to have. The shop was stocked with Brewer style pocket rockets, designed for the tube. They were often dressed to the nines with perfect freehand cutlaps and double pin lines, multicolor nose and tail blocks and maybe a leash loop.
Whether right or wrong, anybody who paddled out to surf in Newport Beach in the 1970s learned who the Brotherhood was pretty quick. Surfers didn’t just paddle out and expect to take a set wave. Standout surfers like Junior Beck, Lenny Foster, Billy Pells, Paul Heussenstamm, and Jack Briggs took the biggest and best waves at Newport Point and the newly constructed 56th street jetty. They also spent a great deal of time traveling, most notably being the earliest crew to surf the treacherous beach break at Playa Zicatela in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. They’d camp on the beach for months with waves to themselves. Shapers Shawn Stussy and Jeff Timpone took over most of the shaping duties throughout the mid and late 70s. Russ glassed them strong, sleek and sexy resulting in board after board that exceeded customer expectations.
A lot changed in Newport Beach in the 1980’s but same could not be said for Russell Surfboards. Sure, the “Brotherhood” days were gone, but Russ and his crew of all-star craftsmen kept building quality progressive surfboards. Shaping at the time for Russ were Al Dove, Dane New, Jim Fuller, John Pribram, Jeff Widener and Greg Giddings. The shop was selling boards like hotcakes. Shop salesman Eric Roberts recalls arriving to work with a short line of surfers waiting outside to buy a board. While the “surf” industry was developing rapidly by selling overpriced beach clothing to the masses, Russell Surfboards continued to sell surfboards almost exclusively. The consistent, steep, fast waves around 54th street Newport became the Hot Spot for aspiring professional surfers and magazine photographers. The now crowded lineups did not deter the Russell Crew from getting waves. The tight knit group preferred to show up early, surf their brains out and leave all before the marine layer burned off and hordes of people showed up.
When there weren’t waves in town, they’d hit the road, seas and skies looking (and often finding) world class surf in far out destinations. It was during this time that Russ built a shack on his property on the north shore of Kauai in Wainiha near the Na Pali Coast. He also built a small glass shop and shaping bay on the property that is still used today.
Russ kept business going strong into the 90’s selling board after board to local and traveling surfers. Al Dove continued to shape hydro-dynamically innovative designs, while two hand shaper/ big wave chargers Roger Baltierra and Chuck Burns shaped boards of all types between their big wave exploits at Puerto Escondido and Killers at Isla de Todos Santos. Local pros Josh Hoyer held his daily airshow at 54th street and tube maestro Kirk Blackman inevitably found the best waves of almost every session much to the chagrin of whomever else was surfing.
Through the 2000s, Russell Surfboards was not only the “wise elder” surfboard builder in Newport Beach, but one of the oldest in the industry. Russ was still laminating, hot coating and gloss coating nearly every board himself. Tens of thousands of boards had left the shop to happy customers. He had a young employee working the sales shop eager to learn the business. JP Roberts learned the business from the inside out. It appeared that Russ would be able to retire and move to his home in Kauai when he tragically passed away.
Today, the shop goes on strong. Shaper Jerry O’keefe continue to shape amazing, unique boards. Dane New is back sanding and polishing boards to a shine. Kirk Blackman still gets the best barrels in town. And JP Roberts is at the helm, running the show, making sure things run smoothly. The shop continues to build and sell boards of all different shapes and sizes. The blending of modern performance, individual creativity, historical tradition and superior craftsmanship continues to make a Russell Surfboard one of the best you can buy.

About Us
MISSION STATEMENT:
Thalia Surf Shop offers unique retro surfboards and hard to find surfing apparel. We curate the alternative for surfers, artists, shapers, and brands because we know the market can be pretty oversaturated. Our goal is to serve well and inspire you with new authentic products every time you visit our shop or thaliasurf.com.
VISION:
To create a classic but modern surf experience.
SHOP:
Located on the corner of Laguna’s historic PCH and Thalia Street, we’ve been a staple in the surf community since 2001. Back when logos were big and egos even bigger, Nick Cocores set out to show the other side of surfing – the style, originality and soul of the sport. He partnered with some of the greats before they became who we know today by showcasing their talent through film, graphic design, and art. And before we knew it, we had a strong following on our hands. Now, almost 2 decades later, we’re still slinging more than just tees for our customers who want to support the independent artists today. Shopping with us not only supports just our small business, but multiple as well. From the screen printer, blank manufacturers, and artists whose designs we commission, your business affects and is appreciated by many.
SCREENPRINTING:
When the shop first started, Nick purchased all the Screenprinting equipment and set up shop in the back of his step dad’s fabrication shop in Vista, Ca. He would bring the tees straight up to the shop the following morning – fresh off the press to say the least. But as time went on, and the shop demand grew, he knew he wouldn’t have time to do both. Enter Sean Tully at Forward Screen Printing. Our friendship with Sean precedes those early shop days, and we still rely on him for all of our Screenprinting needs today. He’s been able to print every design we’ve thrown at him over the years – from a one-color Andy Davis design to an eight color Hairy Daily watercolor print that comes out beautiful every time.
SURFBOARDS:
Here at Thalia Surf, we have a surf everything mentality. It’s even on some of our tees. But we also show this by offering a wide range of hand shaped and machined boards from local shapers. Visit the shop and you might see a personal delivery from one of our friends like Alex Knost, Tyler Warren, Campbell Brothers, or Gato Heroi, just to name a few. From a single fin to a 5 fin bonzer – we’ve got you covered.
VANS:
We were approached by the iconic brand towards the end of 2010 to create a partner store to ensure their surf line meets the needs of the local surfer. To this day, we are the only partnership on the west coast, with one other partnership in Chicago. We’re proud to carry a specific selection of Vans gear that is inspired by Laguna’s surf community by offering the full collections with your favorite athletes that you might not find in your average Vans store and exclusive products with artists you can’t find anywhere else.
Our instructors are our friends. They’re people we trust to give you the experience of surfing that we know and love here. They have experience with a wide range of talent – whether you’re just starting out or you’ve never surfed Laguna and want a local to guide you. Give us a call at the shop when you’re ready to schedule your next lesson, and we’ll make sure you leave the water with a grin!
We rent softboards and bodyboards and also wetsuits! The softboards are 8-foot wave storms equipped with plastic fins and a leash for your leg. The bodyboards also come equipped with a leash for your arm. We are stocked with rental wetsuits for Men, Women and kids for those colder beach days. Rental equipment is charged by the day, so to get the most for your money, get in early, and have it back before dark!

About SoCal Surf Shop
Hi everyone! Welcome to SoCal Surf Shop!
We are very proud to open our new site to all our family and friends! Welcome to our new Southern California Lifestyle Surf Shop. SoCal started way back in the 1960’s in Santa Monica when Paul’s father shaped surfboards in their 600 sq. ft. shop on the boardwalk. Back then it was known by the name of SoCal Surf Club, a place to drink beers and “talk story” about surf trips and the goings on of the day.
There was not a lot of accessories at the time so he would just sell the basics, custom made surfboards and handmade leather sandals. His Mom and Dad taught Paul how to surf at the age of 3, his parents would even tandem surf together in Santa Monica, Malibu and all-around So. Cal.
Fast forward 7 years, the Durant family had moved to Silver Strand Beach. Paul would hang out at the only Surf shop in town called the Sport Port, this is where at the age of 10, he made friends with the owner that taught him how to shape Surfboards and build Skateboards.
Paul continued his love of Surfing and Skateboarding throughout the 70’s, then in the 80’s, he discovered another new love, Snowboarding. He was one of the original professional riders on the Sims Snowboard team. Eventually he earned the nickname of Cochise, but that was not until his mid-twenties.
The nickname Cochise was giving to him due to his Native American heritage and his legendary long black hair. He soon became involved in product development for Sims snowboards and later on he was the product development manager for Vans where he developed the thermo moldable boot liner that is considered the standard for snowboard boots today.
Paul Durant carried the SoCal tradition in his father’s footsteps in 1999 Dana Point where I met him one fateful day. The SoCal shop carried Surf, Skate, & Snowboards, but what I noticed the most was the warmest and kindest man I had ever met in my life – my Husband, Paul.
Sadly, SoCal had to close the doors on their brick and mortar in Dana Point late 2008 and had to rely on the virtual platform known as the internet, but the heart of SoCal stayed steadfast.
He and his two girls, Taylor and Eli, are my family. We all Skate, Surf, and Snowboard together and we returned to our roots by opening our new brick and mortar store in Talega of San Clemente!
Thank you for all your support and kindness these past few years when we at SoCal needed it most.
We updated our website to this new site with all types of new products and new companies for the world to see. We don’t post all our products here on the site, but you can stop by the shop at the Talega Village center in San Clemente, 801 Avenida Talega San Clemente, Ca. 92673. At the Shop you will see the vast selection of new products.
To all of you, from all of us at SoCal Surf Shop – Thank you and we hope to see you at our San Clemente location!!!

The overall vision was to create a Northern Italian environment. Groves of olive trees, rows of lavender, cypress, fig and pine trees plus 45-foot Canary palms grace the Resort, evoking a timeless, authentic landscape. A natural setting that relaxes and invites strolling throughout the grounds.
Details
Each detail of the Resort’s timeless, classic appearance has been created with the utmost care and attention to detail. From placing 1.1 million hand-cut glass mosaic tiles that line the bottom of Coliseum Pool to planting 100-year-old olive trees to add authenticity to the Mediterranean landscape, each piece of the Resort is thoughtfully crafted to create a timeless, classic look inspired by the Italian Renaissance.
Sustainability
Sustainability is about ensuring a positive future. These changes will not help you make a putt or give you extra yards off the tee, but you’ll rest easy knowing that sustainable decisions have been made so that Pelican Hill® will be available, and in great shape for future generations.

HISTORY
A BRIEF HISTORY
- In 1901, thanks to the donation of the land from James Irvine, a nine-hole golf course called The Santiago Country Club was built in Peters Canyon. The largest membership at Santiago was around 45 players.
- The Santiago Country Club operated in this spot until 1914, when an 18-hole course known as Orange County Country Club was opened on the Castaways property in Newport Beach.
- On April 12, 1923, the first meeting was held as Santa Ana Country Club, with C.G. Twist acting as Chairman.
- On April 17, 1923, it was noted in the Santa Ana Register that “the purchase of 144.29 acres from Bradford and Bryan McCoy, Santa Ana Heights, as a site for the new Santa Ana Country Club”. It is understood the site was bought for $71,000.
On the evening of April 26, 1923, a meeting was held to elect officers for the Board of Directors and adopt bylaws. The original Board of Directors hoped to procure 400 members at an initiation fee of $400 each.
- In June 1931 the first issue of the Putter Patter was produced “with the intent of being published by and for the Members in the interest of the Club.”
- In 1932 the economy of the country was beginning to negatively impact golf and country club operations all over the United States. Determined Orange County professionals, businessmen and their wives kept Santa Ana Country Club afloat by diligent planning and assuming duties at the Club and dinner parties.
- Resignations peaked in 1938 at nearly 90 men due to the cloud of the Depression. During that year, Bob Fernandez submitted a report on Membership Income and Club Expenses in a Club Meeting. Years later, Mr. Fernandez would have a tournament named in his honor for all his efforts dedicated to keeping Santa Ana Country Club going during the Depression.
- During the summers following 1942 it became a tradition of many Los Angeles residents to summer vacation in Orange County and many became regulars at the course.
- Sunday, October 25, 1942, would be one of the grandest days of golf at SACC. A gala golf exhibition was staged for the benefit of the “Army Emergency Relief Fund” with the following participants worth mentioning Bob Hope, Ed Kennedy, Bing Crosby, Mickey Rooney and many golf champions.
- In August 1949, with the Course and Club’s popularity rising among the summer visitors from Los Angeles, the Board of Directors initiated the first Invitational Tournament.
- In 1951 Santa Ana Country Club upgraded the course, refurbished the clubhouse, and added a golf shop.
- In the early 1960’s there was a lot of discussion to renovate the Clubhouse and make improvements on the Course in order to stay up with our competition. By 1962 the decision had been made to go with the improvements, but the Club had one major reservation. One of the renovations passed was to replace dry wash areas with shallow lakes which would need massive amounts of water that the Club did not have access to. Together the President at that time, Lou Clem, and the Greens Superintendent, Joe Williams, eventually convinced the Board to go ahead with these changes. “The success of the project dramatically changed the topography, beauty and play of the course.”
- In 1969, after deliberations, the perimeter property, now known as The Master’s Circle, was annexed to Costa Mesa, while the Santa Ana Country Club grounds remained in the unincorporated part of Orange County and still does today.
- In 1970, the Board of Directors were successful in moving a few holes of the golf course for zoning reasons, keeping the Clubhouse construction project under budget and moving the maintenance yard. Due to heavy rains and other expected setbacks the new Clubhouse was completed in 18 months, July 12, 1970.
- By 1980 the Santa Ana Country Club had 400 regular, 15 young associate, 34 women associates and 194 social executive members. President in 1980, John Griff, decided the Clubhouse needed to be remodeled calling it a “necessity”. The kitchen was modernized, storages were improved, the lady’s locker room was expanded and improved, a patio was created outside the dining room, the Terrace Room was created and much more.
- In October 1984 the retirement of Director of Golf, Gerald Hall was announced after 23 years on the job. He passed down the reins to Mike Reehl. Mike’s career at Santa Ana Country Club started in 1967 as a bag boy eventually moving to a part-time starter, to the Assistant Pro & Teacher to eventually the Club’s Golf Pro.
With the Clubhouse reaching its 20th birthday in 1990, their discussion about renovating the Clubhouse became a hot topic, with many members wanting to see the facility upgraded.
- On November 12, 1993, the Clubhouse renovation was complete, and the House Committee was proud that work was done within the established budget of $1,370,000. The renovation project included the air conditioning and heating in the main bar, new administrative offices and the extension of the Club entry and reception area, new oak doors added at the golf entry, the clubhouse was re-carpeted, and the clubhouse was completely re-painted.
- During 1998 the Club celebrated its 50th anniversary of the Santa Ana Invitational Tournament.
- In 2008, the Club’s long tradition of tournaments continued with the two big events celebrating anniversaries. The Santa Ana Invitational celebrated its 60th anniversary and continues to thrive. During the same year, the Santa Ana Derby Member-Guest celebrated its 50th anniversary and has become an event the membership looks forward to year after year.
- In 2009 and 2010, after much debate among the membership about the best approach, a Clubhouse renovation project was completed with a budget of approximately $4 million. The major work of the project was aimed at carrying the rich wood ambiance of the Men’s Card Room throughout the entire clubhouse; work included new carpet and paint throughout, new chairs and furniture, renovations and upgrades to the Women’s Locker Room, and a complete remodel of the Golf Shop to its current state.
- In June 2010, Director of Golf Mike Reehl retired – and was named Pro Emeritus – after 25 years in charge of the Golf Operation, and 43 years of service to Santa Ana Country Club. Geoff Cochrane was named successor to Reehl as Head Golf Professional, and eventually became Director of Golf.
- In 2014, the Club initiated a construction project to create a Mixed Tavern in the location of the former women’s card room. Today, TAVERN 1901 has a prime location and view of the Golf Course, including beautiful patio seating.
- In 2016 the golf course underwent a complete transformation and embarked on an 8-million-dollar golf course revitalization project and complete rerouting. The project commenced on February 1, 2016, and the grand opening was on November 3, 2016.
- During the Golf Course Revitalization Project, the Club also rebuilt Mulligan’s snack shack – the finished look is Mediterranean motif.
- 116 years… and counting!!

ABOUT US
The One and Only American Legion Post with a Yacht Club
New members and visitors are often intrigued with the combination of a yacht club with Post 291. The interesting history of this association dates back to the late 60’s before any of us were members. The leadership at that time thought it a good idea to form a Yacht Club at the Post in order to offer members an affordable way to get involved in boating and sailing. The club steadily grew over the years and became widely known as not only one of the most active yacht clubs in Southern California, but also one of the most involved with civic events and veteran causes. The ALYC membership mirrors that of the Post, with active members from the Legion, Auxiliary, and SAL’s. Nearly 15% of the total Post membership is also a member of the ALYC.
Post 291’s on-water location in a premier harbor on the west coast makes this the perfect place to host a yacht club. What ALYC offers for members is a compelling part of the mix of opportunities available to members at Post 291, and certainly distinct from any other Post in the country. ALYC prides itself on offering multiple activities for veterans and their families who all share a love of the sea. Core to its overall mission is to provide relaxation and connection opportunities for veterans and their families. With dozens of planned events, cruises, and races each year, there are multiple opportunities for members to interact and enjoy new friendships and also some friendly competition.
These connection and fellowship opportunities are vital to many veterans, who are often most comfortable around other veterans. Sharing stories on a boat or around a campfire achieves one of the goals for ALYC. When combined with Veteran Outreach initiatives, such as Wounded Warrior Boating events or Sail for the Visually Impaired, members are able to extend these connection opportunities and experiences into our community and directly to our veterans that yearn to feel the comradery and esprit de corps they once felt in the service.
ALYC offers programs that appeal to every interest on, in, or under the water. Activities range from social and relaxing to physically and mentally challenging, so there is something for everybody. One membership fee to ALYC opens a member to traditional activities such as boating, sailing, and racing, and now even diving and snorkeling and model boat racing. The club owns several vessels, including sailboats available for member use. Details on all activities are on the club website at alyc.com.
The proud heritage of ALYC and Post 291 is connected over the last 54 years, and part of the fabric of Newport Beach. There’s always more to tell with this colorful history, so next time you’re at the Post, look for a member with an ALYC logo and ask to hear a favorite memory. Even better, join ALYC and begin making your own memories with your friends of the sea.
THE HISTORYOF ALYC
Since its humble beginnings in 1966, the ALYC has indeed grown and flourished to become an outstanding and recognized member of the Southern California yachting community.
On the evening of April 23, 1966, certain members of The American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291 held an organizational meeting. The purpose to the meeting was to establish a Corinthian Yacht Club.
During this meeting the following officers were elected: Commodore-Ken Cohn, Vice Commodore-Wally Stephens, Fleet Captain-Charles Trapp, and Port Captain-John McHugh. The name of the new yacht club was The American Legion Yacht Club (ALYC). Bylaws and standing rules were written and established, using the Bylaws of The New York Yacht Club as a guide. The ALYC burgee, a red, white, and blue tri-cornered pennant with “sniper scope” crosshairs at the center, was designed by Mel Noack and fabricated by Nikki’s Flag Shop of Newport Beach.
The American Legion Yacht Club was incorporated in the state of California on January 23, 1967.
In 1987 the American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291 granted the ALYC the use of a heritage building (known as the “Hut”) located on their property. That same year a full restoration of the “Hut” was completed by the ALYC. All materials and fixtures were donated by a combination of sponsors from Post 291, ALYC members, and various community businesses.
Also in 1987, the American Legion Yacht Club (with a membership of 140) applied for, and became, a Regular Member of the Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA).
Today the ALYC has grown to more than a 1000 members. The current membership includes, in addition to its local membership, members from all over the United States and many foreign countries. In addition to reciprocity with yacht clubs throughout the U.S., the ALYC enjoys reciprocal privileges with over 50 other Southern California yacht clubs.
Each year the American Legion Yacht Club sponsors many community-oriented programs including the WSA-OC’s “Sail for the Visually Impaired.” Perhaps the best known ALYC-sponsored activity is the annual “Old Glory Boat Parade” on the Fourth of July. This has become one of the premier and largest spectator events of the summer in Newport Harbor.
In 1994 the Southern California Yachting Association inaugurated its “Club of the Year” awards program. The purpose of this award program is to promote Corinthian Spirit in yachting, foster the exchange of information among yacht clubs, encourage civic involvement and reward participation in SCYA activities. In 1994 the American Legion Yacht Club was named “SCYA Club of the Year”. The ALYC won this award a total of nine times; again in 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2008, 2010 and 2014.
There are two classes of memberships available in the ALYC, Flag and Regular memberships. Voting and office-holding privileges are restricted to Flag members. To qualify for a Flag membership the candidate must be a member in good standing of The American Legion, Newport Harbor Post 291. To qualify for Regular membership candidates must be affiliated with Post 291, or any other American Legion Post, either by Legion membership or by membership in the American Legion Auxiliary or Sons of the American Legion.

CLUB HISTORY
In 1958, ten yachtsmen put up $100 each and founded the Bahia Yacht Club, based in minimal leased facilities on the grounds of the Balboa Bay Club. Bahia means “bay,” and was also the name of the boat belonging to the first commodore, Don Bussey. The initials BYC were the same as an already established club in the harbor, so the word Corinthian was added to avoid duplication of initials. The original burgee, which was the Balboa Bay Club burgee in reverse, was abandoned for the present one when the club was accepted as a member of Southern California Yachting Association in 1959.
In the early years, the club consisted mainly of a very active small-boat racing fleet and an enthusiastic group of cruising boats – power and sail. Most BCYC regattas concentrated on small boats until the idea of racing 10-meter boats on a boat-for-boat basis was advanced. Although class racing is commonplace now, it was a daring concept in 1963.
When Pat Dougan entered Columbia in the 1964 America’s Cup Trials with Walter Podolak and a crew mainly from BCYC, the club became known world-wide. This was the first time in the history of this race that the West Coast had been able to produce a challenger!
BCYC negotiated a new lease giving members full use of BBC facilities, but the expanding membership wanted a new identity. Orange Coast Yacht Club was invited to participate in a merger to finance and construct a new facility.
OCYC was founded in 1964 with a nucleus of 35 yachtsmen and their families and the express purpose of seeking out and acquiring a waterfront site upon which to build a new clubhouse and yachting facility. With the entire membership dedicated to this purpose, the organization was quickly formed under the leadership of Commodore Larry Miller. By-laws were established, a name and burgee selected and SCYA membership achieved.
In 1968, when the opportunity to merge arose, the membership of OCYC voted overwhelmingly to combine its efforts for site acquisition with that of BCYC in order to take advantage of an excellent site on Bayside Drive to develop of a yacht club facility. The newly merged club, now double in size, negotiated a lease with the Irvine Company and moved into the location previously occupied by Richardson Yacht Anchorage.
During construction of the present clubhouse, operations were moved to a nearby restaurant that had been abandoned. The new clubhouse, dedicated in 1971, has been put to full use ever since.
In 1993, an opportunity to purchase the land and marina from the Irvine Company presented itself, and the membership voted to do so. Following months of protracted negotiations, the deal was consummated in 1994. The ever-expanding BCYC membership can be justly proud of its facilities and members who carry the burgee, while racing and cruising, to distant parts of the world.

Welcome to
Lake Mission Viejo Yacht Club
Lake Mission Viejo Yacht Club is located at a private lake and is a part of the Lake Mission Viejo Association. Membership is open to all members of the Lake Association. In the true sense of Corinthian Sailing, our goal at LMVYC is to promote sailing, to encourage good fellowship among yachtsmen afloat and ashore, and to introduce non-boat-owning sailors, young and old, to the sport of sailing.
Our fleet championship series of Regattas are held from March through November. In addition, we host additional special regattas, such as our “Women at the Helm” and “Top Skipper” regattas each year. Other sailing opportunities exist throughout the year including informal “pick up” races on Wednesday evenings during the months of Daylight Savings Time. Also, during the months of July and August, we have summer “raft ups” followed by BYO-BBQs
LMVYC Junior Sailing Team
Junior sailing activities in the club were low key and informal for a number of years, nevertheless, some fine sailors developed and went on to sail for sailing teams at MIT, UCI and Stanford. Then in 2008 a Sabot was donated to the club and two others were purchased at bargain prices that year. Next, an abandoned Sabot and a donated Sabot were extensively repaired and restored to top condition. The club now has a fleet of eight race rigged Sabots available to train new juniors. Four Lasers are also available for day sailing and racing.
Catalina C14.2-K boats are used by the junior sailing team to gain experience in double and triple handed sailing. There are four Club owned Balboa 13s and four CFJs that are available to older junior sailing team members to sharpen their competitive racing skills.
LMVYC junior sailors have distinguished themselves in recent years at competitive sailing events on and off of the lake as regatta winners, series champs and high school sailing team captains.
Participation in the Junior Sailing Team is open to members of LMVYC who 8 to 16 years of age are. Knowing how to swim is a prerequisite. Program goals are to introduce team members to the fun of competitive sailing and advance their sailing skills in a safe environment.

ABOUT THE NEWPORT SEA BASE
The Newport Sea Base is a place where sunlight, sailboats and sea lions are part of the day! Our desire is to inspire a love for the marine environment in the hearts of young people.
Since 1937, the Sea Base has provided fun and valuable educational maritime-based programs to all youth.
Year-round, girls and boys learn oceanography, marine biology, environmental science, boating safety, dinghy and keelboat sailing, rowing, canoeing, kayaking, motor boating, and other aquatic-related subjects.
MISSION
The mission is to provide a marine-oriented public education and recreation facility for youth and young adults for substantial public benefit in the form of enhanced knowledge, awareness, and understanding of the marine environment and aquatic recreation.
The Newport Sea Base is open all youth, including Scouting members, and other youth and young-adult organizations.
The site is provided courtesy of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, and operated by the Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America.
HISTORY
In 1937, when “Sea Base” was little more than a strip of sand just east of “The Arches,” a groundswell of public support created the first 25-year lease of the Newport Sea Base property to the Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America. Since that time, the Sea Base has been providing quality maritime programs for youth with a commitment to developing character and inspiring a love for the marine environment in the hearts of youth.
William H. Spurgeon, III spearheaded a drive to develop the facility that included a bulkhead, storage facility, a clubhouse, restrooms and shower building in 1947. By 1961, 2,100 Scouts used the Base, and by 1969 the overall day use attendance was 12,000 a year. During that period, new buildings and programs, like the summer Aquatics Camp, were added. Many of the programs continue today.
The original Newport Sea Base was beginning to show its age by the 1970s and demolition began in 1979. The Newport Sea Base (in its previous configuration) was dedicated on December 7, 1980.
In 2002, the Sea Base began a $7.2 million project to transform the facility into a modern teaching and aquatics center. The expanded Sea Base now features additional classrooms, a library, conference room, crew center, picnic area and new boating equipment. Fleets of boats include kayaks, canoes, rowboats and over three dozen sailboats. It is also home to the two Sea Scout Ships: Del Mar and Renegades, as well as the Chapman University Crew Team, Chapman University Sailing Team and Corona del Mar High School Sailing Team.
The site is provided courtesy of the Orange County Board of Supervisors and operated by the Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America. A shining example of what a privately funded and publicly accessible facility can do, the Sea Base counts an overall attendance of more than 15,000 per year. The success of the Newport Sea Base has been made possible through the generous contributions of many dedicated donors.

OUR STORY
In July 1931, eight young men formed what is now the West Coast Yacht Club. Inasmuch as the charter members were building boats in their backyards, a sawhorse was selected as the keynote of the club burgee. A combination of the school colors of the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Southern California were chosen for the burgee, resulting in a sky-blue sawhorse superimposed upon a field of cardinal and gold.
Since the inception of the WCYC, its burgee has been flown by members on cruises to many of the romantic ports on the Pacific and The Atlantic Oceans and The Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas, including such places as Alaska, New Zealand and The Panama Canal.
West Coast Yacht Club is a cruising club with cruises and events scheduled throughout the year. Sailing members can enter any Southern California Yachting Association (S.C.Y.A.) race under our burgee.
